![]() I liked very much your mathematical treatment of the subject.” ![]() I had not expected that one could formulate the exact solution of the problem in such a simple way. Schwarzschild modestly writes, “As you see, the war treated me kindly enough, in spite of the heavy gunfire, to allow me to get away from it all and take this walk in the land of your ideas.” Einstein responds, “I have read your paper with the utmost interest. It’s easy to imagine Einstein’s shock when, amid a dreadful war, Schwarzschild wrote back within a matter of days, describing the first known solution to Einstein’s field equations. And nonlinear systems are really hard to solve. Mathematically speaking, general relativity is a nonlinear system. Because gravity is a form of energy, it can behave like matter, creating yet more gravity. At the root of this difficulty is Einstein’s far more famous equation E=mc2, which states that energy and matter are interchangeable. Escher’s famous picture of two hands sketching each other, the circular reasoning of Einstein’s field equations makes them both elegant, yet also notoriously difficult to solve. The pinnacle of this magnum opus was published November 25, 1915, with the concise title “The Field Equations of Gravitation.” While perhaps a bit opaque to anyone without a firm grasp of tensor calculus, the field equations can be neatly summarized by the words of the great physicist John Wheeler: “Space-time tells matter how to move matter tells space-time how to curve.” ![]() In four landmark papers published in the Proceedings of the Prussian Academy of Sciences, Einstein laid out the mathematical foundation of the general theory of relativity, still considered one of the most beautiful and elegant scientific theories of all time. Just weeks before, Einstein had completed 10 long years of dedicated work, successfully expanding his special theory of relativity to include gravitational forces along with electricity and magnetism. Despite his astronomical career, Schwarzschild, then in his 40s, joined the war effort. The recipient was his colleague Karl Schwarzschild, the director of the Astrophysical Observatory in Potsdam and an accomplished theorist and mathematician. The author of this pivotal document was a theoretical physicist named Albert Einstein. Little does he know that it will prove to be arguably the most important work of creative genius of the 20th century. ![]() That night, throwing caution to the wind, he risks using an electric light to read the long and detailed report. ![]() ![]() But we are building in a place where the Tories are too scared to show their face, even though they are pumping out literature that doesn’t have the word Conservative on it.” Photograph: Sean Smith/The Guardianĭuring a pep-talk, Dodds told the canvassers: “You know how difficult this byelection is for us, a 7,000 majority in a place that people said could never ever be Labour. The MP Anneliese Dodds joins party activists canvassing for the Labour candidate, Danny Beales. Important, too, was what they described as his record of “delivery” – a reference to a local police station in Uxbridge that was saved from closure after Khan intervened. More positively, they were to emphasise that Beales, a councillor and charity worker, was a local resident and had a backstory that included being raised by a single parent and someone who had experienced homelessness. In a heavily car-reliant constituency – where London meets the home counties and there are farms as well as tube stations – the anti-Ulez message is one that continues to be hammered home by the Tory candidate, Steve Tuckwell, a local councillor and business consultant, in his campaign literature and in targeted Facebook advertising.īeales’ response – which puts him at odds with Khan – has been to call for a delay to the expansion, a position his campaign organisers reminded canvassers about on Monday as they prepared to knock on doors where “Ulez might come up”. We’ve just got rid of our car, because it’s just not going to be worth it. “I won’t be voting Labour, no, and it’s because of Ulez charge that’s coming. Minutes earlier, the anger among some at Ulez expansion – the plan to expand the £12.50 daily charge for motor vehicles that do not meet the required emissions standards to all London boroughs from 29 August – was underlined by Carol Bell. I’m fortunate in my own background, but I’ve seen enough to come across people who really are struggling and that’s what’s important to me.”Ĭarol Bell, 63, said she would not be voting for Labour because of the Ulez expansion. “Politics is something I’m really interested in and I keep in touch with what the parties are offering. “I always wanted to join the police and, when I did, it was after Sarah Everard’s death, so I’m conscious that there is so much responsibility,” she said. Born in 2003, a pivotal year of the last Labour government, the voter was a recently recruited police officer who was eager to share her views about public services. Not long into the canvassing, an encounter that might have come straight out of central casting for a Starmer campaign clip unfolded when a young woman passing by stopped to engage Dodds in conversation. We added new features to the radar viewer based on feedback we received from the public and emergency management community. The webpage is more reliable now that it's on an operationally supported system 24/7. The NEXRAD system detects precipitation and wind, and its data can be processed to map precipitation. The new page’s infrastructure allows for easy integration of new datasets, like satellite imagery, in the future and The Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) system is a network of 160 high-resolution S-band Doppler weather radars jointly operated by the National Weather Service (NWS), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the U.S. Radar animation loops can be saved, shared and used on social media For times when a single radar is out of service, you still have coverage since radar beams overlap Ībility to customize data to any domain, and data layer preferences can be saved or bookmarked You can find the forecast for the days ahead in the weather details tab below. More radar data, including 159 NEXRAD Doppler radars and 45 Terminal Doppler Weather Radars. Since hail can cause the rainfall estimates to be higher than what is actually occurring, steps are taken to prevent these high dBZ values from being converted to rainfall. The radar webpage can be saved on your mobile device home screen just like an app, so you can use this powerful weather monitoring tool on the go.Īccess to certain dual-polarization radar products to help differentiate between precipitation types, such as rain and snow Hail is a good reflector of energy and will return very high dBZ values. These values are estimates of the rainfall per hour, updated each volume scan, with rainfall accumulated over time. Depending on the type of weather occurring and the area of the U.S., forecasters use a set of rainrates which are associated to the dBZ values. The higher the dBZ, the stronger the rainrate. Typically, light rain is occurring when the dBZ value reaches 20. The scale of dBZ values is also related to the intensity of rainfall. The value of the dBZ depends upon the mode the radar is in at the time the image was created. Notice the color on each scale remains the same in both operational modes, only the values change. The other scale (near left) represents dBZ values when the radar is in precipitation mode (dBZ values from 5 to 75). One scale (far left) represents dBZ values when the radar is in clear air mode (dBZ values from -28 to +28). Each reflectivity image you see includes one of two color scales. The dBZ values increase as the strength of the signal returned to the radar increases. The National Weather Service warns storms could produce a rate of 1 to 2 inches of rain per hour at times. So, a more convenient number for calculations and comparison, a decibel (or logarithmic) scale (dBZ), is used. Most of the rain is expected to be gone between 3-7 p.m. Reflectivity (designated by the letter Z) covers a wide range of signals (from very weak to very strong). It is a joint undertaking by the Departments of Commerce, Defense and Transportation to replace the Nation's weather radars. This ambitious effort is called NEXRAD, the Next Generation Radar program. "Reflectivity" is the amount of transmitted power returned to the radar receiver. A national network of 160 new weather radars, many of them Doppler units, is planned for 1992. The colors are the different echo intensities (reflectivity) measured in dBZ (decibels of Z) during each elevation scan. ![]() ![]() So I have this big custom sentiment spanning across the colorful background and breaking it up. And I have it saying Hello My Friend, You Are My Person and Sending You a Hug. ![]() I also added sub sentiments to each of these, just because I wanted this card to say more than just hello. I used the Versafine Onyx Black ink for my stamping to have a gorgeous rich black impression. I first stamped a Hello in the center of the panel and then added 2 more stamped Hellos – one above and one below to elongate this sentiment. I wanted something simple yet bold and striking at the same time so I used the Hello sentiment from the Clean Line XL stamp set from CZ. Next, I picked a sentiment and I used my mini MISTI stamping tool to stamp it onto the panel. I also ink blended the stems and leaves in Celery, Limelicious, and Pearfection. I ink-blended the poppies in 4 colors of ink on Neenah Solar White 80lb cardstock: Sherbet, Citrine, Cheeky, and Mandarin. This stencil is designed to be used with the coordinating stamp set which adds a stamped outline to ink blended image and completes the look, but I wanted to try using this product, the stencil, alone, without the coordinating stamp set to achieve a different type of look, a vague abstract type of floral background and I think this stencil worked brilliantly for this. I love the new Poppy Field stencils from Simon Says Stamp and I thought about a different way of using it. I love all things abstract and I wanted to create a bold, bright, colorful abstract background for this card. Hello, crafters, this is Yana Smakula for Simon Says stamp! ![]() ![]() If you were to stage your own Meltdown, who'd be on the bill? They're a relatively new band from Austin, Texas and play old-school blues, or what we used to call R&B in the 60s… not what it's come to mean now! I think Cee Lo Green has a terrific voice, and Eminem is a great lyricist. I've just bought the new album of Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears. For anyone who writes lyrics, it's a huge honour to be asked to take part in something by a legend like Ray Davies. And their lyrics are clever, full of social comment and wry observation. Their music is the anti-melody, but Ray always sung it so melodically. I loved them for their clever mix of rock'n'roll and erudition. I'm a 60s guy, so hearing the persistent riff of songs like "You Really Got Me" takes me back. John Cooper Clarke, English performance poet (15 June)įor me, hearing the Kinks instantly conjures up the past. There'd also be a strong UK element with We Are Birds of Paradise and Shock Headed Peters. My choices would include Carla Bozulich, Evangelista and Mexico's Le Butcherettes. Who'd be on your bill if you curated your own Meltdown? I also love female sax player Jessie Evans, JG Thirlwell and Dax Riggs. Big Sexy Noise does exactly what it says on the tin: we're a coarse, unglamorised rock band.ĭo you have any recommendations for new music? Their sound was rough, raunchy and delightfully amateurish. The Kinks were a bit before my time but they were an important influence on the rock music that followed. Lydia Lunch, poet, singer and actress (18 June) It was full of rock stars and singers playing together after hours. Who'd be on your bill if you created your own Meltdown?Ĭarl Douglas, Eric Clapton, Ronnie Wood, Jeff Beck… I'd recreate the kind of time we used to have at the Bag O'Nails bar on Kingly Street back in the 60s. I guess I helped popularise their music over here. I love their stuff and brought it over to the UK. People like Otis Redding and Rufus Thomas. I like a party atmosphere.Īrtists from the Stax record label. It's rocking the house, basically! I specialise in creating positive energy with soul music and getting the audience involved. How would you describe your musical style? My favourite song of theirs was "You Really Got Me", which I think was stylistically different from the rest of the stuff they did. Ray and the boys became good friends of mine. Geno Washington, legendary US soul and R&B singer (11 June) I'd also get Slava Polunin, Robert Wyatt, Scarlett and Viva, Ray Davies, Georgie Fame, Eddie Piller, Deaf School, Count Arthur Strong, Jerry Dammers' Spatial AKA Orchestra, Tim Minchin, the cast of Oliver!, Paul Morley, my mum, Fergus Henderson and his dad and Diarmuid Gavin. Of recent music, I really rate Dizzee Rascal and Tinie Tempah. I'd get the Blockheads, and Althea and Donna for some reggae. And Aloe Blacc, of course, to represent the new generation. I'd get lots of soul and Motown artists on there: Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Ruffin, Martha and the Vandellas and the Miracles. If you curated your own Meltdown bill who would be on there? Man Like Me are a fantastic London band and have been doing the rounds for a couple of years now. He's definitely one I'll be checking out at Glastonbury. My daughter has told me great things about his live show. I love the soul singer Aloe Blacc – particularly the song "I Need a Dollar". It sounds a bit like Lou Reed gone wrong with an accordion! We're also doing a cover of "Lola" in homage to the Kinks. We'll be trying some different arrangements like a classical version of "Baggy Trousers". It'll be a little less frenetic than a conventional Madness concert – a touch more introspective. We've also got Muswell Hill roots in common! We never tried to approximate their sound but I think it shines through in some of our records. ![]() They specialised in making poetry and cinema out of everyday life, all expressed in their own vernacular. They really inspired the way we wrote songs. I'd also invite Wild Beasts and Animal Collective. The records of Antony and the Johnsons have really affected me over the years, so I'd have to put them on there too. If you were to curate your own Meltdown, who would you invite to perform? And I love Alice and the Cool Dudes – another really fantastic group. They're excellent and should really be more recognised. And they had so many different styles going on! The delicate tunes and crazy bass lines of songs like "Sunny Afternoon" versus the pure rock'n'roll of "You Really Got Me".Ī band called the Invisible, who were nominated for the Mercury prize in 2009. They had this punk aesthetic yet all their songs were beautifully crafted. I remember my dad putting on "Waterloo Sunset" and being struck by what wonderful songwriters they were. ![]() |
